What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is an endodontic treatment used to save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. This procedure involves removing the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), cleaning and disinfecting it, and then filling and sealing it. The term “root canal” comes from cleaning the canals inside the tooth’s root.

The Root Canal Process

Evaluation

At your initial appointment, Dr. Kostrzewski will conduct an examination and take X-rays to determine the extent of the infection.

Procedure

  1. Local anesthesia is administered to ensure comfort.
  2. A small protective sheet called a dental dam is used to isolate the tooth and keep it clean and free of saliva during the procedure.
  3. An opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.
  4. The pulp, along with bacteria, decayed nerve tissue, and related debris, is removed from the tooth.
  5. The cleaning process involves shaping the canals and flushing away the debris.
  6. The tooth is then filled with a biocompatible material, usually a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.
  7. A temporary filling is used to close the opening; later, the tooth will need a crown or filling for protection.

Post-Treatment Care

After a root canal, care is straightforward:

  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it’s fully restored.
  • Brush and floss regularly.
  • Attend follow-up appointments to have the tooth properly restored.

Symptoms That Lead to Root Canals

Be aware of these symptoms:

  • Severe toothache upon chewing or application of pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity or pain to hot or cold temperatures
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums
  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums

Root Canal FAQ

Thanks to modern techniques and anesthetics, most people experience little to no pain during a root canal.

It usually takes one or two visits, depending on the condition of your tooth and your personal circumstances.

Root canal treatments have a very high success rate. Many teeth fixed with a root canal can last a lifetime.

Most teeth can be treated. However, if a tooth is too severely damaged, extraction may be the only option.

There are great benefits to root canals as opposed to tooth extractions. With a root canal, you save your natural tooth and don’t have to worry about the expenses or complications associated with tooth removal and replacement. Your bite alignment remains intact because your surrounding teeth won’t be tempted to shift out of place.
